• Green Plan 2010: Colorado Peace Ride •
As a tenet of our commitment towards peace, the Colorado Peace Ride (CPR) is committed to modeling environmentally sustainable practices during our Ride. At the Colorado Peace Ride, we believe that we must fundamentally change our daily living practices so that so that we can live sustainably, in peace with the earth and one another.
1. Through the profits raised by the Colorado Peace Ride, the Sophia Peace Center helps support and empower nonprofits that exemplify sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. These dynamic organizations make a vitally important contribution to creating lasting world peace.
2. In 2009, Colorado Peace Ride Partners included New Community Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to implement sustainability efforts in San Miguel County and Habitat for Humanity, an international nonprofit committed to affordable, green housing for those in need.
3. Eliminating waste, reducing our carbon footprint, supporting green nonprofits and green education are the actions we take to support our belief in sustainability. In 2009, The Colorado Peace Ride recycled approximately 75% of our waste from the ride. In 2010, our goal is to recycle 90% of our waste. Each rest stop along the CPR will have recycling stations where riders can recycle in several marked containers.
4. We reduce waste and carbon emissions by buying local products.
5. We print CPR posters on paper made from 100% post consumed fiber, elemental chlorine free and manufactured with wind-generated power.
6. We reduce paper waste by relying on electronic documents for communication with riders and volunteers rather than mass printing of paper products. This includes electronic registration and electronic fundraising for riders.
7. We reduce plastic waste by providing riders with one refillable container.
8. We raise the standard of sustainable practices for local Southwest Colorado events and share our green plan to benefit other Southwest Colorado events.
9. We educate local nonprofits, volunteers, businesses, and riders about sustainable living through literature, signage, and announcements during the event.
We hope you will join us in 2010 for a phenomenally green ride!
